A Chat With Eppig Brewing

San Diego is known far and wide as the “Craft Brew Capital of the U.S.” That’s in large part to the fact that the metro is home to more than 150 breweries, brewpubs and other beeratoriums, all of which produce truly top-flight beverages. One of our favorites here at Holiday Inn Bayside is Eppig Brewing, a fantastic craft brewer that makes its home within walking distance of our front door. So we decided to have a Q&A with the folks at Eppig to get a better sense of their philosophy, their beer, and why they think folks should make it a point to stop in when visiting San Diego.

Q: San Diego is known as the Craft Beer Capital. What makes your Biergarten a must-see spot for visitors?
A: Our location is the ONLY waterfront brewery tasting room in a town full of breweries. So when you visit, you not only get the best of the San Diego experience. You can enjoy our award-winning beer and the unbeatable San Diego waterfront at the same time!

Q: What’s the atmosphere like at your waterfront Biergarten?
A: Laid back, welcoming, and family and dog friendly. It’s the place you want to go on a lazy afternoon to relax and enjoy a few beers and our amazing San Diego weather. You’ll see couples, groups of friends, and families all coming together here.

Q: What are some of your most popular beers?
A: San Diego is an IPA town, so our fan-favorite West Coast IPA 10:45 To Denver is always popular. Our lager selection has also put us on the map in a crowded brewery scene. From our Special Lager (International Pilsner) to our Beach Beer (Mexican Vienna Lager), crisp easy-drinking lagers pair perfectly with the weather here.

Q: Do you have any fun events coming up this summer?
A: We do! July 4th is our 5th annual Red White & Brews celebration when you can spend the day enjoying beer specials featuring our Liberty Cruise ale release, soak up the waterfront amidst festive decorations, chow down on a BBQ plate, then watch the downtown fireworks display from one of the best locations in the city with the skyline as the backdrop. We stay open late just for the BIG BAY BOOM show. We will also be hosting Oktoberfest on September 24th & 25th. It’s our biggest event of the year, and celebrates the fall season. It also marks the release of Festbier – one of the Bavarian-style beers we are most proud of. We crafted Festbier to accurately represent exactly what you’d drink in Munich, Germany at their annual Oktoberfest. In addition, we host a weekly Thursday evening run club that meets at 6:30pm and returns to the Waterfront Biergarten after for beers and pop-ups. It’s a casual 2-4 mile all levels, stroller-friendly meetup with a regular crowd. And Waterfront Yoga + Beer happens a lot of Saturdays. It’s an incredible atmosphere to unwind during a 1 hour vinyasa class.

Q: Can you tell us a fun fact about Eppig that not a lot of people may know?
A: While many locals know the backstory of Eppig, a lot of visitors may not realize that our co-founder Stephanie Eppig has a long history of Bavarian brewing in her family. Stephanie’s great-great-grandfather Leonhard Eppig emigrated from Germany in the 1880s. He first established the Eppig Brewing empire in the 1880s with his two brothers in Brooklyn NY. The brewery thrived until prohibition took effect in 1920. Fast-forward 150 years, and Eppig Brewing is a revival of the brand, heritage, and craftsmanship embodied in the German beer that came to the United States during that era.

A: Do you offer any onsite food menus?
Q: We do offer a light snack menu. If our guests prefer, they are welcome to bring food in from any of our tasty neighboring restaurants such as Mitch’s or Point Loma Seafoods.

Q: Do you have anything new and exciting in the works?
A: Absolutely. Our next tasting room is under construction in La Jolla. We are also gearing up to launch distribution in Los Angeles and Orange County by the fall. And of course we’re always bringing out a new beer to share with our guests.

Q: Anything else you’d like our guests to know?
A: When they stay Holiday Inn Bayside, they’re staying in a neighborhood that is very much a hidden gem in San Diego. Phenomenal views, restaurants, activities and — of course — great beer!
