Planning Your San Diego Wedding

Ah, summertime — even though our weather in San Diego is absolutely perfect all year round, nothing really compares to the magic of summer. At Holiday Inn Bayside, we’re also gearing up for a season within a season, since summer is also the ideal time for San Diego weddings.

Are you saying “I do” this year? Then read on to check out our take on hot wedding trends for 2021.

There are no small relationships, only small weddings — and big, blowout events had already begun falling somewhat out of favor even before 2020 made large gatherings ill-advised. By keeping your guest list just to immediate family and a very close circle of friends, you’ll ensure a memorably intimate event for everyone. Think limited seating, familiar faces, and a very simple ceremony, and you’re getting the idea. Plus, a smaller guest list and venue also means a smaller splashout of cash, which is always a bonus.

Outdoor Activities

Feeling a little less traditional when it comes to your nuptials? While the standard wedding reception would typically feature dinner, music, dancing, and a cocktail hour, there are really no rules when it comes to YOUR wedding. So think outside the box, and outside the building! Offer an alfresco beverage service, a fun scavenger hunt, or a beach bonfire complete with toasted marshmallows, hot dogs, and s’mores. It’s up to you. The worst of the pandemic may be behind us, but everyone appreciates safety, cleanliness, and space.

Weekday Weddings

We know what you’re thinking: “Getting married on a WEDNESDAY?” But hear us out. Given what’s no doubt going to be VERY restricted availability at most wedding venues this year, many available weekend dates have already filled up. So why not take the pressure off and book a weeknight? You and your partner can then plan a low-key, stress-free event that your guests can attend after work. Your memories will still be filled with love, regardless of the day.

Reimagined Menus

One of 2021’s top trends in wedding food? Small, individualized portions of appetizers and sweets. Since passed hors d’oeuvres have become passé post-pandemic, some couples are opting to offer small, bite-sized treats instead. Amuse-bouche assortments, petits fours, cake pops, canapés, and single-serve cakes are very on-point. And there’s no rule saying you can’t serve popcorn chicken, pan-Asian dumplings, or small charcuterie boards, either. So why not give yourself the permission to get creative?

A New Take on Entertainment

Thanks to the idea of social distancing, dancing is taking something of a seat at modern wedding receptions. As such, traditional DJ setups aren’t the sure-fire option they used to be. Many couples are branching out a bit, meaning that less-common choices such as jazz trios, string quartets, troubadour-style singers, and other live arrangements have seen a bump in demand. When leaning in this direction, your guests will no doubt enjoy the variety. Plus, you and your partner can fine-tune exactly the kind of style you want.

“Sequel” Ceremonies

Due to the difficulties of 2020, many couples who didn’t elect to cancel their weddings outright still scaled them way back. So if you and your partner weren’t satisfied with what you had to settle for, you can always schedule a reboot! Now that there’s a bit more flexibility in the world at large, you can book the party you wanted to have to begin with. Set up a vow renewal for your one-year anniversary and say “I STILL do” — with friends and family present this time.
