Taco Every Day: The Best Tacos in San Diego
Tacos. Everyone loves them. Everyone has a favorite. Even saying the word can make your mouth water. Here in San Diego — thanks to our rich Mexican history — we’re privileged to be the home of the undisputed finest tacos anywhere in the U.S. Hungry? Here’s where to find the best tacos in San Diego.
La Puerta (4.7 miles from the hotel)
Nestled in the heart of the lively Gaslamp District, La Puerta promises (and always delivers) a full menu of “tunes, tacos, and tequila.” Their Sinaloa-style street tacos offer a wide variety of options, including grilled veggie, slow-cooked carnitas pork, and a particularly tasty surf n’ turf featuring tender skirt steak and shrimp. Can’t decide? Feel free to mix and match any three. La Puerta’s kitchen is also open until 2am every day.

Lola 55 (5.5 miles away)
We’re fim believers that all tacos are good tacos. But some are simply a cut above. Lola 55 doesn’t just make an amazing taco, they make a taco good enough to show up on the Michelin Guide. In addition to serving stellar examples of classics like smoked carnitas and al-pastor pork, Lola 55 adds in some non-traditional (but no less delicious) choices such as squash blossom, mushroom, and cauliflower. This spot is not to be missed during your stay.

Las Cuatro Milpas (6.1 miles away)
Las Cuatro Milpas is a star of the Barrio Logan taco scene. Their cafeteria-style restaurant has been serving up delicious specialty tacos since 1933. Be prepared to stand in line for the mouthwatering rolled tacos, but trust us — they’re worth the wait. Still, once you get to the counter, be sure to have your order ready — the service moves at lightning speed. Insider tip: Do NOT skip the hot sauce at the end of the line.
The Taco Stand (7 miles away)
The Taco Stand has multiple locations throughout San Diego County, but our favorite is this close-to-home storefront. The emphasis here is on fresh, traditional ingredients and preparation, with the homemade tortillas themselves being one of the highlights. There’s not a single bad entry on the menu, but we’d suggest trying the nopal (with cactus and avocado), the pescado (grilled mahi mahi) and/or the spicy shrimp camaron varieties.

City Tacos (7.5 miles away)
The mission at City Tacos is to blend age-old Mexican culinary traditions with a distinctly SoCal approach to bright flavors, uncompromising freshness, and healthy options. To that end, the menu is chock-full of choices suitable for every palate, including meats, fish, vegetarian/vegan options, and even Paleo entries.
Tacos El Gordo (12.7 miles away)
Born in Tijuana and perfected in Chula Vista, Tacos El Gordo is the stuff of local legend. This is truly as authentic as authentic gets. Popular favorites like spicy chorizo and carne asada share menu space with traditional cuts such as cabeza, buche, tripa, and lengua. When you go, be sure not to pass up the perfectly spiced adobada pork. And even though the topped fries may be a surprise, they’re also surprisingly delicious.

Taco Tuesday at HIB (right here!)
Aside from the flavor, another great thing about tacos in San Diego is that they’re never far away. If you’re staying with us at Holiday Inn Bayside, come by on Tuesday between 5-10pm and enjoy three tacos for $9, with your choice of carne asada, carnitas, or grilled mahi mahi.
