Uniquely San Diego Experiences

San Diego earned the nickname “America’s Finest City” for lots of good reasons. We’re truly a city for all seasons with something to offer everyone, from the grand in scale to the unique and offbeat. We’ve always felt it particularly shines in terms of the latter. There are just so many interesting, uniquely San Diego stores and dining spots  to be discovered here that you simply can’t enjoy anywhere else. With that in mind, here are our picks for must-visit locations  where you’ll create memories you’ll treasure forever.

Pigment (1.4 miles away)

Located inside nearby Liberty Station, this charming boutique carries a cool collection of plants, pots, beauty products, candles, home goods, art, greeting cards, and women’s and kids’ clothing and jewelry. When originally opened in North Park, Pigment was envisioned more as a gallery to showcase local artists. But it evolved over time into the hip little shop it is today. There’s no better place to buy a San Diego gift or souvenir.

Conveniently located inside Liberty Market, this craft beer shop has a wide variety of beers ranging from double IPAs to alcoholic kombuchas. Bottlecraft is also a great place to find gifts for craft beer lovers, the perfect spot to savor an artisanal brew, and to order delicious eats from the Liberty Market food vendors. The open-air patio here is ideal for enjoying our legendarily perfect San Diego weather right along with your brew. One of the best artisanal cheese shops in the state (Venissimo) is located right inside, as well.

Flashbacks Recycled Fashion (4.9 miles away)

Vintage clothing stores occupy a special place within the popular culture. Since styles are so cyclical, savvy shoppers can often find incredible bargains — as well as the authentic original looks that “new” designs attempt to emulate — by hitting select resale outlets with a sharp eye toward trends. Flashbacks has long been one of the hippest local stops for fashionistas to find gently-used pieces perfect for completing that spot-on ensemble.

The Invigatorium (6.8 miles away)

Need a bit of a wake-up? Between the pixel art-inspired Post-It note mural, fire-breathing Godzilla and extra-strong coffee drinks at The Invigatorium, you’re not likely to walk out still drowsy. The extensive brewed awakenings menu comes courtesy of venerable local java and beer purveyors Modern Times, and the breakfast favorites-heavy food menu (featuring breakfast sandwiches, frittatas and hearty protein bowls) is served all day.

False Idol (6.9 miles away)

Get down with some sneaky tiki at False Idol. This secret speakeasy is home to more than 200 varieties of rum, as well as a flaming volcano that can “erupt” at any minute (although rumor has it that ordering a “Alkala the Fierce” cocktail can spur the lava gods into action). A grotto, wood carvings, and a waterfall are just a few of the other creative and immersive details here. Head to Little Italy’s Craft & Commerce Restaurant to find it.

One Door North (9 miles away)

Something about food cooked around a campfire just hits different. And the folks at One Door North get it. That’s why they’ve created this eclectic eatery that’s imbued with that al fresco spirit. Everything at this quirky North Park noshery is inspired by Chef Fred Piehl’s love of the outdoors. So expect fresh, locally-sourced, and seasonal ingredients in service of an ever-shifting menu of handcrafted delight. Just be sure not to skip the S’mores!

Part Time Lover (11 miles away)

Part Time Lover feels like the sort of place that could only exist in San Diego. Half speakeasy and half record store, PTL still manages to be greater than the sum of its parts. Visitors come for the inventive cocktail program (brought to you by the same folks who tricked out the beverage menus at Raised by Wolves and Born & Raised), and stay for the carefully curated backroom vinyl collection. There’s no place else quite like it.

The Cave Store (11.8 miles away)

The Cave Store is a popular La Jolla curiosity shoppe that features unique items you’ll certainly want to bring home as conversation-starters. It’s situated in La Jolla Cove, directly above a cave unlike any other you’ll ever explore. Originally hand-dug beneath the home of miner Gustav Schultz in turn-of-the-century 1902, the cave was first mined for minerals before becoming a bootleggers’ smuggling passage during prohibition.
