What’s New in 2020 at the Best San Diego Theme Parks

There’s already a lot going on at San Diego’s theme parks, between the soaring coasters, waterslides, and games — from bumper cars to laser tag. Starting in 2020, there will be even more to look forward to. Check out what’s hitting SeaWorld, Legoland, and Belmont Park in the new year.

SeaWorld will be opening the Emperor coaster, which is California’s first floorless “dive coaster,” in the summer of 2020. It is so named because it centers around a “dive” of more than 150 feet — meant to evoke the Emperor penguin’s dive into the ocean. It also features loops, which you will experience at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.

The park will additionally unveil a new, annual summer-concert series, featuring country, alternative, and classic-rock musicians — complementing other concerts and festivals held on the grounds, such as the Viva la Música Latin-culture celebration in June.

LEGOLAND California Resort will be opening a new section of the park inspired by The LEGO Movie. You can experience rides inspired by different characters and settings within the movie’s universe, like Benny’s Play-Ship and Unikitty’s Disco Drop — all enveloped by a full-dome virtual screen resembling Lego bricks.

Belmont Park

Although the park opened both in late 2019, San Diegans are excited to continue experiencing two new attractions at famed Belmont Park, on Mission Beach. In the Jungle Gems attraction — a nod to California’s gold-rush history — children can “mine” for small gems, shark teeth, and more. The Coconut Climb is a vertical climbing course styled as a soaring coconut palm — you’ll race your friends to ring the bell at the top.
