Wineries in San Diego You Should Visit

It’s something of an understatement to say that California is a prolific state when it comes to great wine. In fact, our home state is responsible for nearly 85% of all U.S. wine production! And even though most people think of Napa Valley when they think of California wines, the San Diego area has produced some fine bottles as well — many ideal for enjoying the warm sunshine on a bright springtime afternoon. Want to grab your friends and sip some great wines at local tasting rooms? Here’s a look at some wineries in San Diego that are worth checking out.

Just minutes from downtown, Gianno Buonomo focuses on wines that reflect the unique and splendid terroir of San Diego — fresh, earthy, and so smooth you can actually taste the sunshine. As the only beachside winery in San Diego, their tasting room, wine production facility and event venue is just steps away from the sand in Ocean Beach. Gianni Buonomo was also recently named “Best Urban Winery” by San Diego Magazine.

Located in lively and vibrant Hillcrest, Négociant finds itself in the perfect neighborhood for the sort of playful and decadent craft-style wines they’re fast becoming known for. Their sparkling Rosé is excellent, as is their Chardonnay — and all of their wines are available in bottles or growlers to go. Négociant’s tasting room also hosts regular live music performances, so you can soak up some local culture while you sip a few vintages.

The Jooste family of LJ Crafted Wines are fourth-generation wine experts, having managed French-owned vineyards in South Africa prior to arriving in the US a decade ago. Their experience is evident in every bottle. LJ’s tasting room is located just steps from the water in La Jolla, and offers a charcuterie and small plates menu along with enticing samples of their direct-from the barrel Cabernets, Pinots, Chardonnays and many more.

As such, their regularly-released “Pay it Forward” wines are exceptional bottles that also see a portion of proceeds donated to local charitable organizations. One taste of their varietals, and you’ll see why Carruth is one of southern California’s most decorated vineyards in international wine competitions.

Bernardo Winery (28 miles away)

Bernardo is the oldest continually operating vineyard in the region, having produced exquisite vintages since 1889. Since then, Bernardo’s Syrahs, Zinfandels, Chardonnays and other varieties have won multiple awards. You can sample them yourself by making a reservation for one of their tastings. Then, once you’ve grabbed a bottle or three of your favorites, browse the charming shops and artists’ kiosks on the grounds.

La Finquita (“The Little Farm”) sits on eight acres of some of the best grape-growing land in Southern California. Their “Barrel-Kissed” wines are finished in seasoned casks that impart complex, delicious notes.

These standout vintners (like Castelli Family Vineyards, Beach House Winery Pamo Valley Winery and Storum Ranch Cider & Wine) all produce superbly delicious bottles, and their tasting rooms are absolutely worth your consideration. In addition, if you happen to have your passport handy — the Villa De Guadalupe region (located just over the border in Mexico) is world-famous for excellent vintages.
